2012: the bitter and the sweet

Hello foodie friends,

I want to first say thank you to all my readers. Whether you are new to my blog, or you’ve been here from day 1. Thank you for being a silent reader, or a commenting reader. Either way, I have appreciated your interest and I have enjoyed reading your blogs too. This blog has proven to be my biggest connection to the people who have gotten me where I am. My blog has been my networking tool as well as my creative outlet. And for this, I say thank you.

As 2012 comes to a close, I have both a heavy heart and a thankful heart. A heavy heart because my family just lost our sweet uncle. My uncle Andy was more of a big brother than an uncle. He lived at our house with us, went waterskiing with us, went out to dinner with us, cooked with us, had Christmas with us, had drinks with us, listened to music with us and most of all, made us laugh. (the photo below is Andy hugging his sister, my mom, at her National Marketing Director acceptance speech for Juice Plus back in April)

He touched so many lives while here on earth, and heaven is very lucky to have him.

On a happier note, this year was huge for me. First off, I started up a social media marketing firm called New Digital Strategies.

Then, I graduated from SMU with degrees in journalism and Spanish.

The day after, my best friend and love of my life (cheesy, but true) Ryan proposed. And I said yes of course!

This summer was spent building my business, planning my wedding and hopping around uptown Dallas, living in a one bedroom apartment in the middle of it all.

This summer also marked my very first yoga class. The class that made me fall in love with yoga, and I’ve been going every week ever since.

I endured the first 9 months of my first business, meanwhile learning lots about several industries, making new friends and building awesome business relationships at the same time.

Planning my wedding has been a lot of fun, and I found the dress too!

By the end of the summer, I began officing out of BuzzShift and got the pleasure of getting to know a seriously talented group of people. I’ve not only gotten to work alongside the BuzzShift team, but also gained a new family.

By November, I had the most memorable trip to Akumal of my life. Being with Ryan’s family and having my family there too, as well as close friends was a trip of a lifetime. Ryan’s mother put together the most special engagement party that will stick in the minds of every single person who attended. I am blessed to have such a thoughtful person as a mother-in-law (who will become my MIL in June!)

By December, I completed my first half marathon (13.1miles) with my Mom and beat my PR goal. Finished in 1:57 (and truly felt it the next day).

I became closer to a friend who I love with all my heart.

I traveled to Mexico, Las Vegas, New Orleans, LA, NYC, La Jolla, Phoenix and Memphis.

I ate my way through countless new restaurants.

I wrote 112 blog posts.

I am so excited for 2013. The year I marry Ryan, the year my sister graduates high school and goes off to college, the year my twin brother walks the stage to claim his USC diploma and begins work too. All of these events happen to fall in the same 30 days. Cheers to a bittersweet 2012, and here’s to a prosperous and enriching 2013.

Love,

My New Years resolution: cook more food

It’s the second to last day of 2011 and naturally we’re all thinking about our new year’s resolutions…right? Ummmm, not really, but I just thought of mine. Cook more food. Now, do not fear. This doesn’t mean That Foodie Girl won’t be out on the town scoping out the newest and best (and sometimes not so great) eateries around Dallas. It just means she’ll be cooking up some great new recipes for all sorts of people to enjoy.

And because Pinterest is so “pinspirational” (shoutout to Ellen here) I naturally gather and hoard plenty of recipes I plan on trying. Here are my top 5:

1. Vegan cinnamon pull-apart bread

2. Roasted Veggie Strudel

3. Butternut Squash Lasagna

4. Strawberry Greek Yogurt Bites

5. Veggie Soup

Hope you all enjoyed my recipe choices. Here’s to 2012–the year I will come up with my own recipes, and cook even more!

Bon appétit,

ThatFoodieGirl
