Chic Wrap Review

I’m here to let you in on a little foodie secret. Chic Wrap is the bees knees. What is Chic Wrap you may be wondering?

(product has been comped)

Meet your new best kitchen friend. And I’m not just saying this because I got it for free. We’re talking time and money saver. How about I just list all the reasons I can’t get enough Chic Wrap in my life?

1. It sticks to itself, therefore it can stick to pretty much any material. Including ceramics. This means my pumpkin cookies lasted an entire week and stayed nice and fresh.

2. It even properly seals a CAN.

3. Because my favorite apples (honey crisp) are so huge, I was able to enjoy just 1 apple for 2 days. I ate half one day, wrapped it up in Chic Wrap and stored it in the refrigerator, and I wish I had a photo of it but the apple was just as fresh as when I cut it the day before. No brown spots or anything! This stuff locks out all the air. It is amazing.

4. It doesn’t get all tangled and messed up and make you want to throw the wrap at the wall. (We’ve all been there). It comes out nice and clean and you just zip the plastic slide cutter over the plastic and voila, you’ve got the perfect amount of plastic wrap.

5. There’s no metal teeth involved which meant no more blood drawn from just trying to wrap things up. Safe for everyone to use.

6. They look pretty. I keep mine out on my countertop because it’s cute and people ask me what it is!

7. It’s $9.99 and you get 250 feet of plastic wrap. Plastic wrap that clings so tight, it saves you all that food you would be throwing away. You can buy refill rolls too.

Can you tell I’m a Chic Wrap believer? Check out their sparkly-looking Facebook page and go ahead and order one. Tell them That Foodie Girl sent you :) An awesome company developed and created by great people. Maybe I should become a Chic Wrap affiliate…you will believe it when you use it.

my new favorite hummus brand: Zilks.

Greetings from Austin, Texas. I’ve been home this weekend to take a little breather post graduating from college, getting engaged and something else exciting that I will announce soon.

One of the best parts about being in my family’s home on Lake Austin is the kitchen. It’s big and spacious, full of memories and most importantly, full. of. hummus. (see figure above)

Because my dad played in a golf tournament this weekend, we all were introduced to our new favorite hummus brand. Meet Zilks. They were the main sponsor for the weekend. Formerly known as Out to Lunch (which I didn’t realize when we met one of the partners), I’ve always been a big Out to Lunch hummus fan…until now they’ve rebranded and I assume Zilks bought them out.

Not only does Zilks do hummus (the name is short for Zilker Park–to all my Austinites, you will appreciate that), they also do tzatziki, queso and salsa. They cook their sauces and hummus right out of their kitchen in South Austin, and you can find their products at Whole Foods and Central Market.

My personal favorite out of the above flavors is the balsamic roasted garlic & red onion. Other flavors I can’t wait to try:

  • basil pesto hummus
  • chipotle sundried tomato hummus
  • spinach & artichoke hummus
  • black bean w/ lime hummus
  • tzatziki Greek yogurt

They pride themselves on their wholesome and very few ingredients. Only the freshest and nutritious hummus possible.

So, wipe that drool off your chin and sprint to your local Whole Foods. Now now now!

Products I’ve been loving: Yumnuts, Tempt, Chocolove

A few days ago I was so tired of not being able to the grocery store, that I just got up on my one crutch and hobbled throughout Central Market with a basket hanging from my arm. Although it was painful and I got some weird looks, at least I have some fun new-to-me products I  want to share with you all.

  1. Yumnuts

If you didn’t giggle at the name, you’re more mature than I am. I am a sucker for cute packaging and new items, and when I saw all the flavors of cashews, I was so excited. Even though I’m not cashew nuts’s #1 fan, I still like them and these honey cashews are sweet, and they make a great dessert replacement…or accompaniment. One thing I’d like to change? Their 3 ingredients are cashews, honey & organic evaporated cane juice. It’d be nice if it were just cashews & honey. But that’s ok! These nuts are dry roasted sans oil and they’re 100% natural.

Other flavors worth noting: chocolate, toasted coconut, sea salt & cajun. They also make almonds: dark choc, cinnamon & ginger orange.

2. Chocolove dark chocolate, sea salt & almond bar.

I’ve seen lots of you bloggers out there raving about this chocolate bar so I had to give it a go. And by give it a go I mean I knew I’d love it so I had to buy one. The hints of sea salt is perfection, it’s dark chocolate so I can justify it as an “OK” dessert/snack andddd there’s a love poem inside. Mine was kind of long and odd, but there’s a love poem on a chocolate bar and that’s all that matters.

3. Tempt Hemp milk

No, I’m  not a hippie and yes, I was intrigued by this hemp milk. Although I’m not quite sure how it compares to almond/coconut/soy milk, I know it’s better than any kind of dairy. To be honest, I was searching for my favorite coconut milk to put in my smoothies but Central Market didn’t have it. Instead I opted for Tempt, and their unsweetened vanilla gave my smoothie a creamy, not-to-sweet flavor and I love that there’s a lot less sugar per serving compared to almond milk.

And along with my Tempt hemp milk I also purchased some hemp milk ICE CREAM! Can’t wait to try it.

Have you all had any of these products? What did you think?

A wonderful treat for a cold dreary day: So Delicious

So Delicious.

It says it in the name. It’s So Delicious (dairy free). It’s a drizzly, cold, just all around icky day in Dallas, and what better time than to have a Christmas in a cup. And if you aren’t familiar with Christmas in a cup, it’s usually a Starbuck’s peppermint mocha. But this time, it’s dairy free (made with coconut milk) and it’s a bit cheaper. You can drink it cold or hot, but right now, you’re going to want to pour some in a mug, heat it up and cozy up by the fireplace.

I have never tried the egg nog flavor because I’m not an egg nog fan, but the mint chocolate is the way to go. If you’re not lactose intolerant or vegan, THAT’S OK. This drink is delicious for everyone. It even got Ryan’s seal of approval (and that says a lot since he’s pretty skeptical when it comes to dairy/meat replacements). It’s yummy, natural and healthier than soy milk or your usual Christmas in a cup. Go ahead, indulge. We won’t call it dessert.

Featured Foodie Product: DRY Soda

DRY Soda

Ok, I’m not a soda girl, but this soda is good. When I do crave a soda (which happens about once a month or less), I want something bubbly with just a hint of sweetness. And that’s exactly what DRY Soda is.

I was at Central Market when I was introduced to my new favorite soda, and I went straight for my favorite flavor: rhubarb. It’s just a distinctly delicious flavor that’s extremely hard to find! I pounced at the chance of trying a rhubarb product, even if it was a soda. Not only is it super refreshing, there’s just a tinge of rhubarb (but not to little to the point where it just tastes like bubbly water) and it’s only 60 calories. Even better, there’s only 11-19 grams of sugar in each bottle depending on what flavor you get.

Speaking of flavors! They offer wild lime, lavender, lemongrass, blood orange, rhubarb (obviously), juniper berry, vanilla bean and cucumber. YUM. Next stop? Cucumber for me.

Oh, and, thanks to the DRY Soda website, I now know what to mix into my soda if I’m feelin an adult beverage:

How awesome is that? So if you’re ready for an adventurous new drink that’s healthier for you than your Diet sodas, you’ve found your match. Either way, just try one.

Featured Foodie Product: KeVita

Alright, alright, calm down. It’s not exactly kombucha. Reaping the same benefits as drinking kombucha (which most people think tastes like vinegar), KeVita is a tastier way to get your probiotics that promote healthy digestion and an overall healthy immune system. As a health conscious young woman, I’m always on the lookout for healthy alternatives that taste great. Sometimes hard to achieve, but KeVita hits the nail on the head.

KeVita is a sparkling probiotic drink that contains tea or water, their own “KeVita cultures” (which are basically kefir-based probiotic strains), blended with plant extracts and organic fruits. Maybe that description doesn’t appeal to you, but wait til you hear about their amazing lineup of flavors:

-strawberry acai
-mango coconut
-original coconut
-lemon ginger
-living greens
-green tea

My favorite is the original coconut–the perfect combo of sweetness and sparkling tea. I love the strawberry acai, but sometimes it’s a little too sweet.

This beverage is refreshing, makes you feel great and truly helps digestion. It puts a spring in your step! Trade your Diet Coke in for a KeVita NOW. Although KeVita is slightly pricey, your body is begging you for it. KeVita can be found at your local health shop or any Whole Foods.

Featured Foodie Product: Somersault Snacks

Somersault Snack Co.

You juuuust did a product review. I know that’s what you’re thinking. But, I last minutely grabbed these suckers off the shelf at Whole Foods yesterday and was pleasantly surprised.

Just take a look at the bag! How cute is the design of the bag? Although I’d never judge a book by its cover, I definitely judge snacks by their bags/containers.

I have to admit I was a bit confused about what these snacks were in the first place– the description being “crunchy nuggets with sunflower seeds & toasted grains.” Good thing I grabbed them, because they are delicious, not to mention nutritious. To give you a better idea of what they are, they’re little sunflower and grain clusters. See photo below:

I got the pacific sea salt flavor, to be on the safe side. Other flavors include dutch cocoa, salty pepper and santa fe salsa. My next stop? Dutch cocoa.

It was a great pick-me-up after my workout, and I also used it in a recipe I will share with you all tomorrow. For all you salty lovers out there, you’ve finally met your match. A much healthier alternative to chips, these snacks hold many health benefits.

According to their website, sunflower seeds are packed with antioxidants, protein, vitamin E, minerals and the “good” fats. They also claim sunflower seeds help with blood pressure, cell production, heart health, nerves and muscles and immunity. Wow! Snack on, fellow foodies.

Featured Foodie Product: Kind bars

Kind bars.

My latest product obsession. Kind bars. Maybe I’m a little late on the Kind bar train, but these bars have been my favorite go-to breakfast or snack item. Although they are 200 calories a pop, it’s the real stuff. And by that I mean it’s a whole food bar with no processed ingredients, just 100% real food.

When you bite into your “energy bar” each morning, you might want to take a look at the sugar count and perhaps the ingredient list. If there are items on the ingredient list that you can’t pronounce, it’s probably not the healthiest thing you can put in your body. And that is exactly why I prefer Kind bars. Instead of all the sugary processed bars that are available everywhere, I look for Kind bars for a wholesome and filling breakfast. Also, the bars are gluten free, contain no trans fats and are low sodium. What’s not to love?

My personal favorite is the peanut butter dark chocolate. Since I’m a chocolate addict, it’s nice to get the healthier type of chocolate (the darker the chocolate, the better) mixed with peanut butter and a whole slew of different types of nuts. Inside this bar you get seven grams of protein and you get the awesome flavor. My only complaint? It’s kind of hard to bite into.

My next favorite:

The cranberry almond. If I’m not feeling my sweet tooth early in the morning, I love the flavor combo of dried cranberry paired with almonds. This bar is 190 calories (not that I really pay much attention to the calorie count on these bars since I know I’m getting the good stuff regardless) and is full of antioxidants and fiber.

Thanks for reading my product review–now go out there and give these guys a try!

Shiner Ruby Redbird: the perfect summer beer

(photo not my own)

BEER? Yes, that’s right. Although I’m not the biggest beer drinker around, I found the perfect Texas summer beer. Shiner Ruby Redbird is Shiner’s seasonal beer full of refreshing and light flavor. I’m not big on IPA’s or super strong beers, and this particular beer almost makes you forget you’re drinking a beer. Its delicious tinges of grapefruit and citrusy goodness makes it perfect for hot triple-digit days like the ones here in Texas. Best part? It’s so good, you’ll finish it before it starts to get hot outside…which I have found becomes a real problem in the Texas heat. I’m no beer expert, but I enjoyed this beer so much I thought I’d recommend it to all of you. So get out there and find a case– it’s relatively cheap and it will only be around til September. Cheers!

Featured Foodie Product

Justin’s Nut Butter

My latest favorite food product would have to be Justin’s Nut Butter. Because almond butter is so much healthier than peanut butter, I tend to buy almond, rather than peanut butter. Justin’s comes in jars and little 2 Tbsp packs–I choose the packs for the convenience. I just cut up an apple, throw a pack of chocolate almond butter in the bag, and I’ve got a delicious snack for during work or anywhere on the go. Since I’m a chocolate lover, the chocolate almond butter is my favorite. It’s so rich and delicious, I actually like to have a spoonful as a dessert replacement (oops!). But if you’re not into almond butter, he also makes classic, chocolate and honey peanut butter. For almond butter, there’s chocolate, maple, honey and classic.

Other ideas for what to do with Justin’s? Spread it on a piece of bread, add sliced banana, and you’ve got a healthier alternative to a Nutella sandwich. For me, I like to cut up fruit, whether it be bananas or apples, and spread the nut butter on. You can also add them to healthy milkshakes or even bake with it. Whatever you choose to do with it, it’s a great product!

On top of Justin’s overall yummy factor, they stick to their mission of being green and making the smallest carbon footprint they can. They use recycled paper for cardboard, their headquarters is solar powered, the products themselves are sourced locally and sustainably and they’re working towards a compostable squeeze pack!

Justin with his products

Something else I learned–Justin’s makes peanut butter cups! Reese’s fans REJOICE! I haven’t seen them with my own eyes yet, but I will definitely be on the lookout.

Hope you enjoyed this month’s Featured Foodie product!

Bon appétit,
