anniversary dinner, crab apples and prosecco

My fiancé and I got to celebrate our 6th anniversary a week late, but better late than never, right? We didn’t feel like getting dressed up and going out, so we opted for a cozy night in. We ordered a prosciutto and parm pizza from Fireside Pies with a (heaping) side of caesar salad. The pizza had wayyy too much prosciutto, but the caesar salad was the real focal point for us. It was delicious.

Props to Fireside for their generous portions of fresh ingredients. The caesar came with freshly grated parmesan…to die for. I found a chunk of fresh parmesan in my salad and gladly ate it atop a piece of crust.

The other focal point was trying this Santa Margherita prosecco. I love their white wine, so this was a treat. It was dry with a hint of sweet. That description came out of the mouth of Ryan.

The plan was to watch Dexter (how romantic), but unfortunately we found out that my AT&T plan didn’t have Showtime. Breaking Amish it was. And it’s so hard not to watch that show when it comes on. TLC, people.

Wondering about the crab apple portion of the headline of this post? Here ya go:

They look like cherries, but they’re hard like apples. Baby apples! I couldn’t resist taking a photo…buying…not so much. I do want to eventually try one. Found them at Whole Foods.

And finally, my training update.

This was yesterday’s morning run. It’s been so nice in the mornings—temperatures in the low 60′s!! Awesome. And the training schedule has gotten a bit ramped up with more mileage during the week.

Yesterday: 4 mi, 45 mins (did it in 43:18). Slow, easy breezy run.

Saturday: 7 mi run on the treadmill. It was pouring rain all day, so I forced myself to run on the treadmill. Ran it in 1hour2mins. Record time for me! 1.5 episodes of Revenge helped me get through those miles.

Friday: rest!

Shiner Ruby Redbird, veggie pizza and Starbucks Refreshers

Greetings from Austin! I spontaneously decided to drive home and spend a few days here. Because it’s my vacation and it’s so nice to be here! Today I have snapshots of what I’ve been up to. This first one is getting some work done out on my porch with little Molly.

We also went on a 1 mile walk together. We’ve been sticking together.

As soon as I got home yesterday, I headed to our pool with my brother and enjoyed a Shiner Ruby Redbird. One of the many perks of summertime. Then we decided to make a veggie pizza. We chopped up veggies, rolled out the whole wheat dough and topped it with marinara, some light mozzarella and cheddar and dashed it with goat cheese. It turned out really well. With caprese salad on the side.

We also had a few friends over for a glass of wine.

And finally, a drink I had been wanting to try, I got it on the way to Austin. The Starbucks Refresher. I tried the very berry Hibiscus and wasn’t a huge fan.

I like that there were blackberries “muddled” in there, but the overall taste was a tad artificial.

Has anyone else tried it?

Brunch at Cane Rosso: bigger than Texas

Cane Rosso [pronounced kahn-A row-so]

What: Pizza & brunch on Saturdays

Where: Deep Ellum

After hearing so much about this hyped up little Deep Ellum Neapolitan pizzeria and especially after seeing it on the D Magazine’s recent list of best egg-tastic brunches in Dallas, I wanted to see if it lived up to its name. (p.s. Malai as one of the best brunches? Hmm…we’ll have to see about that)

We parked in the lot across the street where several cars including BMW’s were booted on multiple wheels (why?) and I fed the parking meter and hoped my car would be there when I got back.

I walked in to meet some friends who were seated towards the very back and a dimly lit section of the restaurant.

The dimness was sort of off-putting for a normally bright and cheery time of the weekend: brunch on a Saturday. The lighting was especially horrendous for a food blogger needing to photograph her food (oh well).

I ordered their breakfast panini stuffed with eggs, prosciutto, fontina, tomatoes, arugula, chili aioli all on wood-fired bread with a side of crispy pancetta and breakfast potatoes.

This “sandwich” was bigger than my face. I don’t know if you can tell from this photo, but it was HUGE. I could only finish half of one of those pieces and I was really hungry. Besides the size, it was an awesome sandwich. The bread was crispy on the outside and nice and dough on the inside which really paired well with the egg texture combined with the flavoring of the prosciutto on the inside. The breakfast potatoes were boring and bland. Kind of soggy too.

Speaking of large and in charge, take a gander at my friend Lisa’s “starter salad”:

Their very basic starter Mista salad with mixed greens, balsamic, tomatoes & parmesan, this family sized salad came in at $8, so I guess I shouldn’t be complaining about the large sizes of these plates. But there’s something offensive about getting a massive joke of a plate set in front of you when you only wanted a side/starter salad or just a breakfast panini. You almost feel like the joke is on you and the waitress could have at least warned you. But, again, at least everyone got a bite, right? Anyone else feel this way?

My friend Katie ordered their Regina Margherita with tomatoes, bufala mozzarella and basil. I had a bite and it was wonderful. I loved the texture of the pizza and the almost slight doughiness of the end of the piece and the crispness towards the crust. Simple and good.

And finally, another brunch item Jeff ordered. The biscuits and gravy with ricotta biscuits with spicy sausage gravy and oven roasted potatoes. He said it was good but this photo doesn’t really do a great job of conveying it.

All in all, it was good food but not great atmosphere back where we were sitting. The portions were way too big and the service was alright. One thing I loved was this table up at the front of the restaurant:

My suggestion? Share a plate with someone. Oh, and I can’t wait to try their ricotta pancakes with nutella marscapone & fresh berries with a side of pancetta.

Thanks for dealing with me photographing all the food (and for taking photos). The girls at brunch: (me, Katie, Lisa)

The boys: (Jeff, Andrew)

Vino 100, Olivella’s and crock pot cooking

Greetings, everyone. It’s been quite a few days without a new blog post and it was making me upset. I just want to go ahead and say, it’s not that easy getting around with only one functioning foot/leg. With that being said, this post is full of iPhone photos. Once I’m up and walking (2 weeks from today!!) I will be using my new beautiful camera much more often. So until then, we’re going to have to make due with what we’ve got.

First of all, I’m reunited with Ryan and it feels so good. I’m now back in Dallas with him and last night we were feeling some thin crust pizza..so naturally, we turned the corner and headed inside Olivella’s. A neighbor of SMU, Olivella’s has gotten national recognition for their authentic Italian thin crust pizza, complete with the big wood fire oven in the open kitchen. Because it’s such a tiny place, we took a seat at the bar. It wasn’t too loud so we got to have nice conversation, our food came out really fast and we got to learn some Italian words via their Italian dictionaries piled right next to us. We shared a pizza with arugula, tomato, mozzarella and prosciutto. It was delicious and simple, and then Ryan also had their lasagna.

Afterwards, we met up with a friend at our favorite wine bar in town, Vino 100. If you didn’t know it already, I love a good glass (or two) of wine. Malbecs, Merlots, Shiraz, you name it.. but I prefer Malbec. At Vino 100, they pride themselves on the utter quantity of under $25 bottles of wine..at least 100 of them. It’s a great, cozy spot for a night with good friends and a bottle of wine. Oh, and there’s couches next to a fireplace. I think I might just have turned into a homebody.

And finally, another foodie highlight is today’s christening of my new Crock Pot. On tonight’s menu we have a chicken and veggie Thai yellow curry. Let’s hope this turns out! I will update you all tomorrow with the finished product.

Have a great Thursday evening!

Bon appétit,

Watery bellinis, Second Bar and Kitchen and clementines

Good morning foodie people!

It’s 9:30am and I’m AWAKE! I haven’t been up before 10:30am in the past 3 weeks. And I don’t feel bad because I need sleep to heal, right? Speaking of which, I only have 19 days left of being on crutches. Almost there…

What I really want to accomplish in this post is this. It’s a new year, and I want this blog to get better than ever. And there’s a couple of ways I want to do this. First of all, I’ll be working on the design of the blog and the overall user friendliness of the site. Second, I want to get more personal. I know I enjoy the blogs that let you in on their lives and what they’ve been up to, and dare to veer a bit off the foodie path. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop doing restaurant reviews. This just means I want to feel a little more free to just write a blog post that catches you up on some of the things I’ve been up to or been munching on.

One of those things I’ve been particularly enjoying is cuties (or clementines). I’ve seen lots of food bloggers including clementines in their photos of their meals, and they’re just too delicious this time of year.

Another highlight of my week was dining at Second Bar & Kitchen on 2nd St and Congress Ave. I’ve been meaning to try it out, but it’s a good 35 minutes from my house. This time I had a good excuse: a friend’s birthday. The ambiance was perfect, not too fancy, cool and comfortable with an edge. Dress up or down, but some waiters will be wearing tshirts so you sort of feel at home. The art work was really cool—the lights in the photo above was like a glorified chandelier above our heads.

These things were dangerous. Their black truffle pomme frites. Although I expected the traditional “pomme trite” a.k.a. thin fries, these thicker steak fries were to die for. If you like truffle, that is.

I do believe this restaurant deserves a full review, I wasn’t properly equipped with my brand new camera, so that’s why you only see crappy iPhone photos. Next time I go back, I will bring you a full review. To recap, I had their vertically roasted chicken breast with kale, sweet potato, apple-parsnip puree, little sourdough croutons and cider jus. That’s a bunch of fancy for DELICIOUS. I loved the incorporation of the winter veggies and the chicken just melted in your mouth.

And finally, the watery bellini. My family ate at CraigO’s, a pizza and pasteria, and we were not pleased with our experience. My bellini was tasteless and we waited about an hour to get the wrong pizza. It was super crowded with families and small children, so I’ll give them that. Either way, I’d be willing to give them another try, but I won’t be ordering a cocktail.

Have a lovely weekend and PONY UP! (My Mustangs are playing Pittsburgh today)

p.s. what do you all think of my new year’s ideas for this blog? Do you like the more informal posts as well? Or should I stick to more formal reviews? I want to hear from you all!

Bon appétit,

Pie Five: Dallas’s newest pizzeria.

Pie Five Pizza Co.

What: pizza

Where: new location at Knox & 75

The original lunch plan was Potbelly’s. Until we saw the newly filled restaurant space with black and red accents. It’s Pie Five Pizza Co, the new pizza place that has now graced Knox and 75, where Alo used to be. We happened to stumble upon this pizzeria at the best time possible–the day before opening (i.e. their run through/practice day). So pizzas were on the house!

The inside is a clean, sleek and modern space with plenty of tables and areas to grab a quick bite during your lunch break. Their personal pizzas are 9″ for $6.49 for both specialty pizzas and build-your-own. The best part? It comes out super fast.

I tried their Tree Hugger pizza– a vegan pizza with their thin crust, marinara, mushrooms, peppers, red onions, olives and banana peppers. I got really excited to see they had a vegan item on the menu, but then again, there’s no cheese on it, so it’s not that exciting. I think next time I go, I’ll stick with cheese, or maybe they’ll get some vegan cheese in sometime. My favorite part about the pizza was the thin crust– it was the perfect crunch to soft ratio. Yep, I said that.

Ryan got the Pie Five High Five. Classic crust, pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon, ham, beef, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Pretty much the opposite of the Tree Hugger. It was tasty, but nothing too special. The crust needed to be cooked a little more, but hey, that’s why it’s called a practice day. I’m sure they’ll iron out all the kinks.

I don’t think it’s fair to completely criticize a brand new restaurant that hadn’t even opened yet, so go try it for yourself. I’m sure it’ll be a new favorite lunch break spot, especially if you’re in the mood for pizza.

Bon appétit,

Eno’s Pizza Tavern: a hidden Oak Cliff gem

Eno’s Pizza Tavern

What: pizza

Where: Oak Cliff (Dallas)

Many of you may be thinking, it’s not hidden, it’s just in Oak Cliff. Others may be thinking, yiiikes, Oak Cliff? Well, I’m here to tell you Oak Cliff isn’t half bad as many SMU students may think.

Nestled in a cute and cozy little pedestrian town sits Eno’s Pizza Tavern. So cozy that there’s a few rocking chairs on the outside. I had never been inside this part of Oak Cliff, so it was somewhat foreign to me, but I really felt I was on vacation somewhere. Somewhere away from Dallas.

The inside is large and open, complete with a big open bar with jars of bar snacks and a collection of homemade mugs hanging from the ceiling. Benches and wooden tables are plentiful–it’s just a great place to relax and be with friends.

I came with a large group (the You+Dallas team!) and the service was pretty good from what I can remember.

I ordered the veggie supreme pizza which came with tomato, bell pepper, mushroom, garlic, green onion, mozzarella and ricotta. The pizzas come thin and very homemade-tasting, but my pizza was a bit on the bland side. But I’m just going to hope that was just a one time thing.

For lunch they have an adorable menu “Keep Calm, More Pizza Is Coming” which basically means they have an awesome deal for lunch on Tuesdays-Fridays. For $9.99 you get a salad, drink and an endless amount of pizza. They have a rotation each day of 3-4 different types of pizzas, they come by your table with a whole pie of each, but you can only take one at a time. As soon as you’re ready for another piece, they’ll come by with another type of pizza. And their choices really piqued my interest…

Eno’s does pizza, but they also do sandwiches, pasta, salads and more. If you’re not feeling up to pizza (why are you at Eno’s, again?), you have other choices. And if you’re around for dinner, I dare you to try their “Eno’s Sundae Sack” for dessert. Chocolate, Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, marshmallow cream, fresh berries, pecans, hot fudge, graham cracker, cinnamon & sugar and whipped cream. WOW. I haven’t gotten to taste it yet, but I can’t imagine it being anything short of amazing.

If you have some time, explore Oak Cliff a little. You can walk around and find bars, shops and even a chocolate factory…which will be a blog post coming soon!
