A perfect Saturday morning treat

You know it’s going to be a good weekend when your Saturday morning begins like this. At 11am. Sun is shining, coffee is brewing, and it’s time for waffles and a side of peanut butter of course.

Please excuse the missing bites out of this waffle..I was hungry. I was missing the maple syrup (new apartment…oops!), so I made my own healthier version of a sweet beginning. Waffle + plain Greek yogurt + blueberries + drizzle of honey. Oh and an occasional dip in the PB jar. It was so good and kept me full.

How did YOU begin your weekend?

What I Ate Wednesday: eat the rainbow edition

Happy WIAW everyone! So happy to be participating again this week.

This week’s WIAW is actually what I ate today (Wednesday), not my eats from yesterday or last week. Today. See? I’m getting better about posting now that I have a routine.

Is there anything more glorious than a big bowl of fresh fruit, yogurt & raw oats first thing in the morning? How about with the sun coming in? Taking this photo made me happy. Eating this bowl made me satisfied.

This bowl of plain Greek yogurt + peaches + strawberries + blueberries + bananas + raw oats kept me full for 4 hours or more. It was so delicious, I can’t wait to go to bed tonight so I can wake up and do the same thing tomorrow. Am I weird?

When lunch rolled around, I wasn’t that hungry, but decided to take advantage of my fridge full of fresh produce. I find that when I fill my fridge with the rainbow, I eat all that produce, and love it more than a usual sandwich lunch. This bowl contains a bed of arugula + spinach, sautéed yellow tomatoes, zucchini, bell pepper, fresh sliced avocado and a fried egg. A little bit of everything, I guess. It was yummmm.

Have a great evening everyone!

my new favorite hummus brand: Zilks.

Greetings from Austin, Texas. I’ve been home this weekend to take a little breather post graduating from college, getting engaged and something else exciting that I will announce soon.

One of the best parts about being in my family’s home on Lake Austin is the kitchen. It’s big and spacious, full of memories and most importantly, full. of. hummus. (see figure above)

Because my dad played in a golf tournament this weekend, we all were introduced to our new favorite hummus brand. Meet Zilks. They were the main sponsor for the weekend. Formerly known as Out to Lunch (which I didn’t realize when we met one of the partners), I’ve always been a big Out to Lunch hummus fan…until now they’ve rebranded and I assume Zilks bought them out.

Not only does Zilks do hummus (the name is short for Zilker Park–to all my Austinites, you will appreciate that), they also do tzatziki, queso and salsa. They cook their sauces and hummus right out of their kitchen in South Austin, and you can find their products at Whole Foods and Central Market.

My personal favorite out of the above flavors is the balsamic roasted garlic & red onion. Other flavors I can’t wait to try:

  • basil pesto hummus
  • chipotle sundried tomato hummus
  • spinach & artichoke hummus
  • black bean w/ lime hummus
  • tzatziki Greek yogurt

They pride themselves on their wholesome and very few ingredients. Only the freshest and nutritious hummus possible.

So, wipe that drool off your chin and sprint to your local Whole Foods. Now now now!

Authentic Greek food at Snack NYC

Snack

What: Greek

Where: Soho

I stumbled upon this little Greek eatery on my Four Square app…and when I say little I mean it. It was a tiny little 5 table restaurant situated on a relatively calm street in Soho. Thankfully we only had to wait about 10 minutes since it was just me and my Dad. We were squished into the little place and it was kind of hard to hear each other even though we were just a foot away from one another. But that’s New York sometimes, right?

We started with the hummus and the Greek salad. As you can see, the Greek salad was very authentic and delicious. I loved the fresh cucumbers, onions and tomatoes drenched in maybe a bit too much olive oil. The starters were both really good–the pita bread came out a bit late, but was freshly baked, warm and went really well with the hummus.

I had the spinach pie. A nice little “snack” size (ha), it was filo stuffed with spinach, feta, onion, parsley and dill. I liked that it was just the right amount, but I wasn’t crazy about the flavor. Since it was under the “savory pies” section of the menu, I assumed it would be more umami-tasting (that’s just a cool way of saying rich and savory). The pie was more of a bitter, tart tasting dish. I would have preferred more feta and less dill, but hey, maybe this is more of a authentic Greek dish. I don’t know, you tell me!

My dad ordered the vegetarian mousaka. Although it appears to look slightly strange, it was rich and satisfying. Almost like a Greek lasagna, the mousaka came with eggplant, mushrooms and a creamy bechamel sauce. It was a lot for a lunch portion, but good nonetheless.

So if you ever find yourself looking for authentic Greek food in Soho, this is your place. I wasn’t that impressed with my spinach pie, but I think I would go back to try some of their dinner options like my personal favorite– saganaki, a delicious kasseri cheese lit on fire and topped with lemon juice.

Tonight I’m going to a Yankees game. Be on the lookout for a ballpark food post!

Bon appétit,
