Fall time grocery haul

Topping my list of things I’m most excited about for fall would be honeycrisp apples. And I know I’m a food blogging cliché, but I’m ok with that. Honeycrisp apples dipped in almond butter. Nowwww we’re talking. As you can see, my neighborhood is looking pretty green and the temperatures are in the high 90′s. Hard to feel like fall when that’s the case! Soon enough.

Another great part about fall is the pumpkins! Especially cute mini ones! I had never seen a white mini pumpkin, so you bet I spent too much on these at Whole Foods, but they make me happy.

It was time to get stocked up on the essentials at Whole Foods. And since it was a lazy Sunday, I enjoyed strolling each aisle and deciding to try some new things. I took a long time finding a cereal with low sugar and high fiber. These wheat squares have 0 sugar, and this morning I paired it with almond milk, sliced bananas and strawberries. It needed a little sweetening.

One of my other “new” items was this Elmo soup. Laugh it up, go ahead. But there’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of alphabet soup on a cool day. I’m waiting for that cool day to comfort myself but I seriously looked everywhere for alphabet soup. (I am 2 years old). It was on the bottom shelf. Perfect reach! For a 2 year old.

This combo sounded incredible..and it was. I don’t feel an ounce of bad about myself when I eat a square of dark chocolate. I read about food bloggers trying to fight chocolate cravings, but why not give in? There are worse things!! (like ice cream…that happened on Friday…and Saturday).

This is the most exciting product I picked up yesterday. I was so excited to see that my favorite kombucha (brewed in Austin, Texas!) Buddha’s Brew is now sold at my Whole Foods on Lemmon! I got 2 bottles of honeydew and let me tell you this kombucha is a TREAT.

For all you kombucha skeptics, you could hardly taste the vinegar aspect and you certainly didn’t notice any of those “cultured strands” you may be afraid of. It’s very sweet and tastes divine. My only problem with this particular flavor is that they added organic cane juice. I’d rather just have the kombucha + real fruit juice. But it’s so tasty, I don’t mind too much.

And to catch you up on my training:

Friday: Rest Day

Saturday: Ran 7 miles in 1:12!!! I was so proud of myself and I definitely felt it in my knees and ankles later that night.

Sunday: Rest Day

Today: I will be running 3 miles…most likely on the treadmill since it’s blazing hot out

The Front Room Dallas

One of the best moments of this past weekend had to be my dinner date with Ryan at The Front Room. I couldn’t wait to try Hotel Lumen’s newest addition.

What: upscale diner

Where: Park Cities

Please excuse the horrible iPhone photos. I started off with the Mai Tai. It was refreshing and delicious. Ryan had the Jalapeño Caipirinha.

For my entree, I had the Chicken Paillard. I was very satisfied with the flavor. The arugula was dressed with a light lemony vinaigrette and the chicken was perfectly cooked. It was the perfect light dish to eat out on the patio.

Ryan had the steak and fries (wasn’t cooked the way he ordered it, but fries were good). On the side we shared their mac n cheese and green bean casserole. I got so excited green bean casserole was on the menu. It was a bit too creamy for my liking, but tasty nonetheless. The mac n cheese was very rich and creamy–with shell pasta. I tended to gravitate towards the fries.

Dessert was a hard choice because their menu was so jam packed with drool-worthy options. We went with the coconut cream pie–more of a cheesecake texture, but perfect amount of crust to sweet filling. Wish I had a better photo to represent it, but this will have to do!

The prices were right and so were portions. Even though they’re brand new, we had a great server. He was attentive and quick. I can’t wait to go back for a glass of wine and their “deviled tomatoes”! See ya soon, Front Room!

Baboush: Mediterranean-Lebanese food in Dallas

Baboush Market & Bar

What: Mediterranean/ Lebanese fusion

Where: West Village, Uptown Dallas

How did I not know about this place? It was a nice surprise as Ryan and I were walking to get a pizza from Grimaldi’s and I’m so glad we decided to give Baboush a shot. We sat outside, and despite it being really hot outside, we loved being able to dine al fresco.

I decided to cool off by ordering one of their “sexy drinks”– the Lebanese Night. Vodka, guava nectar, fresh strawberries and lime juice. Really delicious if you like something fruity.

Ryan went with an exotic Lebanese beer.

At first glance at the menu, we were impressed by the decently priced menu items…especially for an uptown venue. When we actually received the dishes, we understood it was more of a tapas-style place. Smaller portions. But that’s ok.

We started off with their hummus. It was creamy and smooth, and the pita bread was warm and fluffy. And we got another basket full of the pita bread.

I was excited for my falafel to arrive, but was a bit disappointed. They were over-fried. They were extremely tough and hard to get my fork through. On the side is a lemon tahini sauce. I’m willing to give it another go just because I haven’t found a whole lot of falafel spots in Dallas.

On the side I had their saffron couscous with chickpeas, raisins and white onions. It wasn’t all that flavorful, but there’s something about couscous. I just love the texture. It went well with the hummus too.

Ryan enjoyed the grilled chicken kebabs with a tabbouleh-like salad underneath.

All in all, I think Dallas needs more Mediterranean spots like this. I truly hope the falafel will be cooked to perfection next time I stop by. Otherwise, the hummus and pita and cocktails were enough to get me back there. Also, if you’re into hookah, they have that too.

Bonus: Scout Mob just posted they have a 50% off deal right now. Just download Scout Mob on your smart phone, show the deal to your server, and voila! You’re welcome!

Cru Wine Bar

Good afternoon (almost evening) foodies!

I’m finally getting to blog a bit more and it’s making me really happy. I really hope you all enjoy reading almost as much as I enjoy writing…comments would help! I know there are readers out there (thanks to WordPress analytics). ANYWAY! While I do get behind on blogging, I almost never get behind on blog reading. My Blog Lovin account is my best friend.

So let’s get to the point. I finally got to try Cru out and loved spending the evening out on the patio with Ryan and our friend Danny, sipping on a bottle of a crisp and not to sweet Sauvignon Blanc. It was a sweltering 90+ degrees so white wine was our match.

The bottle prices were high, but I guess I should have expected that. I’m used to my regular wine bar spots like Veritas and Vino 100 where you can find a great selection of wines that are sold at retail prices. But! Cru did have a pretty good menu, and we really enjoyed our pear and gorgonzola pizza. Which is not pictured because we were so hungry and I forgot to take a photo.

If you’re a wine person, you might want to enjoy a glass at Cru!

Whole Foods Bee Cave and life changes

HI. Ok, I know I begin almost every post these days with “wow, life has been a whirlwind.”But. It. Has. This is a photo I just snapped with my phone. Moving out of my college apartment (and using eco friendly boxes–thanks for the idea, Emily @ Daily Garnish) and storing for a week, then moving to Uptown Dallas!

I also got a new car. Meet Mrs. Ford Edge Eco Boost. She’s currently in the shop getting a brand new computer for the “sync” entertainment and nav system…a day after I bought it. Grrrreat!

Other than the nav system going haywire, this thing drives like a dream. I LOVE it.

And one last thing. My new favorite hangout in Austin: Whole Foods Bee Caves.

I love that each Whole Foods has a unique aspect to it.

This one has a bar complete with WINE on tap.

Oh and their awesome hot bar.

But the best part:

A fire pit in the front! This will probably only be good between November and March, but that’s ok. I’ll be back.

Less random posts coming your way very soon. Just have to get my life on a normal schedule. That will probably happen when I move into my new apartment on June 9th.

Tate’s: mouth watering cocktails and good apps

Tate’s

What: cocktails, full bar, appetizers

Where: Uptown Dallas

This crappy iPhone photo doesn’t do the BlackBird Julep justice. Loaded with berries and (yes there’s some alcohol in there) Chambord, Smirnoff citrus, lemon, simple syrup, this cocktail is one of my favorite fruity drinks in Dallas (#1 goes to Bubbles & Berries at Ocean Prime). It’s one of those drinks that tastes so good you don’t even realize you’re drinking alcohol…which can quickly become a problem. Coming in at $10, it’s sort of small for the price, but a decent price for such a pretty drink–a strong one at that.

Tate’s is fairly new to McKinney Avenue, but fits right in with its open air patio in the front. Although it’s kind of loud due to the trolleys and traffic, it’s got a good city vibe to it and the cocktails will make you forget the noise.

I was really impressed with this “bar food”. They included lots of Dallas area appetizer favorites–hummus and bruschetta being the ones we ordered. The original hummus on the right was the best. The one on the left was kind of watery. We stuck to the original. The pita bread was good, and it was nice to get some vegetables in…at a bar!

Next up we had their tomato bruschetta. Nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary here, but the simplicity worked in Tate’s favor.

If you haven’t made it over to Tate’s yet, I’d say give it a try. Go with a cocktail. It’s what they do best.
